On being in my 40s

Tracee Ellis Ross in her 40s.

Entering my 40s became a major time of reflection – on what was, what could have been, and what I’m thankful is no longer.

In my 40s, I can no longer…

  • walk long distances in 4-inch heels
  • bounce back from hangovers in less than 24 hours
  • eat what I want without repercussion
  • sleep until 1 p.m.
  • drink liquids past 8 p.m.
  • sleep through the night

But I can now…

  • stop obsessing over how I look
  • throw away the guilt and shame of past bad decisions
  • purchase luxuries without robbing Peter to pay Paul
  • ignore others’ opinions
  • put my needs first
  • be happy with who I am, where I’ve been and where I’m about to go
